How can I humanely kill my injured fish?

We have owned this fish for 24 years now. He is a very large fish and recently injured himself in the tank. He can't swim anymore, and he just hits himself against the rocks and is causing many soars and wounds. My father is emotionally attached to this fish, so I'm wondering if there is any ways to put this fish out of it's misery humanely. Thanks.
